Metallic paper prints
What is our Kodak Metallic paper?
Metallic paper is an interesting beast, it appears to have a fine fleck of a reflective substance in the emulsion, so with the viewing light in the right place it literally glows, it is quite amazing. It can make a yellow look golden, and greens and blues leap off the page.
We think it has a slightly limited dynamic range as it doesn’t render highlights and shadows as well as our other papers, however what it does for midtones and colour is second to none.
It is impossible to softproof on a monitor as it responds differently to in various lighting situations, so we suggest you softproof to our matte paper profile and expect some differences.
Metallic paper is a silver halide product, this means it is traditional light sensitive photographic paper that needs to be developed in chemistry to set the image, it cannot be used in an inkjet printer. We expose light on this paper using a digital enlarger, so we work from your digital image files, or scans of film or photographs.
Metallic paper is also a high gloss, therefore it needs to be treated like all high gloss materials in that it will show handling problems and cannot be in direct contact with glass or arcylic as the two smooth surfaces will firstly look like they are sticking due to a hydorscopic effect, and will eventually stick.
Here is Kodak’s comment on their Metallic paper:
ENDURA Metallic VC Paper uses a proprietary combination of film laminate layers to produce three-dimensional, outstanding, lasting images on an ultra-bright background. Its professional emulsion set provides extreme sharpness, brightness, and color saturation.
