The Light Between

After a wonderful response to his SALA23 exhibition at Praxis Artspace, David Hume’s latest iteration of this series of seascapes is being shown at The Strand Gallery Port Elliot 30 Mar 2024 – 6 May 2024.

The Light Between is an iteration of the series that has been bubbling away inside David’s heart for his entire life. That is a big statement, I make it because in all the time I’ve spend with David, discussing art and place and techniques, this subject slips into the conversation.

I had a wonderful afternoon with David and his partner at a shack they rent periodically, and we sat facing the sea mesmerised with a silent awe that only comes when all the senses are engaged, and one is quiet enough to feel them. It was unintentional, but wholly affecting.

David has an affinity with photographic film that layers into this love affair. While he is an accomplished painter, he returns to photography to carry the big notes. For David, a seascape is the the sky meeting the sea. An infinity of changing tones, it never settles. And as he watches the change, he grabs at moments with a camera. He also attempts to layer the photographs with overlapping exposures, in the Alice Blanch style.

I commend you all to make the journey to the Strand Gallery at Port Elliot and see this marvellous show.

The exhibition also features the work of Nicole Rex, Ron Langman, and Tricia Ross, a strong accompaniment.

A note about the gallery, it was developed by Ron and Sonya, and has been a fixture of the sleepy sea town for many years. This exhibition will be their last as they close the doors 10th of June 2024.
