Adelaide Design Week

It seems that Adelaide’s Mad March is spreading out to the Spring end of the year with Fashion Week, Oz Asia, and now Design Week (and probably more I’ve not discovered).

What is ADW?

Adelaide Design Week recognises design as a fundamentally human practice — intentionally turning our attention to the people who think, question, design, make and participate in our design culture.

We came across this through Sam Agastino of Michi Australia Design who was after some framed prints for the festival. Sam then connected us with Bronwyn Marshall, who is currently running the festival. It was a bit too late for us to become deeply involved, but it’s now on our radar.

Bronwyn invited me to show some work in a curated show called “SLOT”, and in the gallery below you will see the Ambrotypes I submitted. My work was alongside furniture makers, sculptors, authors and photographers. I was proud to be a part of it.

Whilst we had made work for Sam’s space and show Yolk, one of Bronwyn’s students Penny from Philo, had approached us for support for her show “To Feel In Place”. Penny had taken over the most beautiful space in the Darling Building, occupied by Design by WBL. Woah. The entire work space was threaded through (litteraly) with Penny’s photography printed on our smooth cotton paper. Penny had used red cotton thread and sewn hangers and connectors into the prints….magnificent.

I also attended Benched, the closing party where makers and designers had created a room full of benches, a treat for the conversation about what works, what is comfortable, what feels safe, what looks fun….it was brilliant.

Congratulations to all. Adelaide Design Week was brilliant.
