The Hand-Made Photograph

OK, I realise this is a bit insane, but I jammed this visit in too.

Magnet Gallery (https://magnet.org.au/) is a small independent gallery based in the Docklands Melbourne, Magnet only shows photography. How exciting, we need this in Adelaide!

The exhibition I went to see featured several friends and their alternative and historic processes.

This is all current and new work, but it is made with processes that, in several cases, are over 100 years old. These are often hard to wrestle with, but can be very rewarding.

The big problem I have with alternative photography, is the art needs to be about more than the process. Grabbing the viewers’ attention must happen. The viewer cannot be dragged into being impressed by how much trouble the artist went through, to not be rewarded by something that holds their attention.

The Hand-Made Photograph at Magnet has a lot of really interesting work, and some truly outstanding pieces that are worth the visit.

While not every piece commands your attention, it’s worth reading about their process and gaining the understanding of how broad photography can be.

Bravo all!

Craig Tuffin’s remarkable Daguerreotypes. You have not idea how difficult these are to perfect. And this series are around 250mm across!
